New betting sites appear constantly, and most open with the same pitch to try and win over new users. A smart design, a headline offer and a promise to be different from the rest of the market.
Very little of that tells you whether you can trust them with your money. Before you register anywhere, run through the checks below. They take about ten minutes and matter far more than the welcome bonus.
Check for Licensed Operators Before You Start
Any operator taking bets from customers in Great Britain needs a licence from the UK Gambling Commission, and a logo in the footer proves nothing on its own.
Find the operating company’s name and licence number at the bottom of the site, then search for it on the Gambling Commission’s public register. You want an active status and a licence that covers the activity you plan to use, whether that is sports betting, casino or both.
If the number is missing, or does not match the register, walk away. It is the quickest check you will ever do and the most important to stay safe when playing online.
Look Out for Sports Depth, Not Just Headline Numbers
A long sports list looks impressive, but what counts is how much you can bet on in the sports you actually follow.
The Proper Bet Review is a good illustration of how this works in practice, going behind the numbers to reveal the facts. The site launched in August 2026 with a focused menu of 17 sports, yet a single Premier League match offered more than 120 markets, from match result and handicaps to cards, corners and player specials.
For most punters that is worth more than 40 sports with a handful of markets each. Check the extras you will actually use too, such as cash out, bet builder and live streaming of racing.
They are what separates a strong site from a basic one, and that leads to somewhere being your home for betting for a long time.
Find the Safer Gambling Tools
Deposit limits, time-outs and reality checks should be easy to find, and ideally you set them up before the first bet.
Licensed UK operators are expected to offer them, and how a site presents them tells you plenty.
If they are buried three menus deep, take that as a warning. If they are offered during sign-up, the operator is at least thinking about its customers.
Set a monthly deposit limit that you could happily lose, and treat it as the cost of your entertainment.
A Welcome Bonus, Not a Reason to Join
Free bets come with conditions attached such as minimum odds, qualifying stake sizes, expiry windows that are often only seven days, and stakes that are not returned with winnings.
Read all of that before you commit, because an offer that expires before you have a sensible bet to use it on is not worth much.
A missing offer is not automatically a red flag either. When it was reviewed, Proper Bet had no welcome bonus at all, and the site still stood up on its licence, markets and tools.
A strong operator does not need a gimmick to drag people through the doors. When you are ready to compare options side by side, our betting sites section is a sensible place to start.
Test Withdrawals Early
Depositing is always easy, and it’s withdrawing where operators show their true colours.
Look for clearly published payment methods and processing times, and make a small first withdrawal before you build up a balance.
Verification checks are a normal part of the process and nothing to worry about, but long delays with no explanation are.
If a site makes cashing out harder than paying in, that tells you everything you need to know.
