From Rising Talent to Global Star: The Story of Shakib Al Hasan

A Career That Outgrew a Single Narrative

Few cricketers are as closely connected to the fortunes of their country as Shakib Al Hasan is to Bangladesh. His story is not simply that of a player building an exceptional career. It is also the story of how one man’s talent developed alongside a national team still fighting for consistent recognition on the world stage.

For followers examining Shakib’s performances across international and franchise cricket, platforms such as db bet offer another way to track match data, team form, and expectations around major fixtures.

For most of the past two decades, Shakib has been the central figure in Bangladesh cricket. Great all-rounders rarely define an entire country’s cricketing identity on their own, but Shakib has come as close as any player realistically could.

The Making of an All-Rounder

Shakib’s rise was gradual rather than sudden. It was built series by series through disciplined left-arm spin, compact batting technique and a temperament that rarely deserted him in important moments.

Many talented players from emerging cricket nations shine briefly before stronger opponents adjust to them. Shakib followed a different path. He continued to climb the international rankings, anchor Bangladesh’s middle order and challenge bowling attacks that appeared stronger on paper.

His longevity cannot be explained by skill alone. It also reflects an unusual level of resilience. Poor team results, public controversy and changes in the national setup did not erase the credibility he had built over many years.

Even during Bangladesh’s most difficult periods, Shakib remained the player around whom opposing teams were most likely to design their plans.

Shakib and the National Team: On, Off and Back Again

For much of the past fifteen years, Bangladesh’s national team has depended heavily on Shakib. He has served as captain, senior player and leading match-winner. At the same time, his relationship with the team has rarely been straightforward.

At several points, questions about his availability had little to do with his performances on the field. More recently, the situation became political.

Shakib, a former Awami League Member of Parliament, was sidelined amid political sensitivities following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government. For a period, it was unclear whether he would represent Bangladesh again.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has since softened its position. It retained Shakib on its central contract list and stated that he could be considered for selection, subject to government clearance.

The situation remains unresolved. Shakib has said that he cannot determine whether the renewed interest in his return is genuine or primarily connected to his commercial value. Nevertheless, the possibility of another appearance for Bangladesh has not been ruled out.

One Last Series on His Own Terms

One theme continues to shape the final stage of Shakib’s career: he wants to return home and finish on his own terms.

His most recent Test appearance came against India in October 2024. Since then, he has spoken openly about his desire to play red-ball cricket in Bangladesh once more before retiring.

His preferred plan is to return for a complete home series involving Tests, One Day Internationals and Twenty20 matches, then bring his international career to an end in front of Bangladeshi supporters.

Not every great player receives the opportunity to arrange a farewell of that kind. Shakib is still hoping for his.

A National Team in Turmoil

The uncertainty surrounding Shakib has formed only one part of a wider period of instability in Bangladesh cricket.

Tensions between the Bangladesh Cricket Board and the Board of Control for Cricket in India intensified after bowler Mustafizur Rahman was dropped from the Kolkata Knight Riders squad. Combined with continuing security concerns and disagreements between the cricket authorities, the dispute escalated further.

Bangladesh ultimately withdrew from the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and was replaced by Scotland.

Shakib publicly described the withdrawal as a government blunder. He argued that Bangladesh’s absence from a major tournament represented a serious loss for supporters in a country where cricket occupies such an important place in public life.

His response was consistent with his reputation. Throughout his career, Shakib has been willing to criticise administrators, selectors and government officials when he believes their decisions have harmed Bangladesh cricket.

At the same time, he remained pragmatic about how relations could be repaired. He suggested that a bilateral series, potentially scheduled for August or September 2026, could provide a realistic starting point.

In his view, regular cricketing contact between the two countries would be more effective than symbolic gestures in rebuilding trust between their respective boards.

An Identity Bigger Than One Tournament

Bangladesh cricket has spent years trying to establish a clear identity at international level. Much of that identity has been shaped by what Shakib represents: proof that the country can produce a genuinely world-class cricketer capable of succeeding against the strongest teams.

That is why updates about his fitness, bowling action, political position and selection status continue to generate attention far beyond what would normally surround a single player.

For a long time, Shakib’s availability has served as an informal measure of the national team’s condition. When he is present, Bangladesh appears more experienced, balanced and competitive. When he is absent, the weaknesses in the team’s structure often become more visible.

Shakib also remained active while his international future was uncertain. He continued to appear in franchise cricket and at international cricket events, including Belgium’s EU T20 tournament.

There, he spoke about the depth of India’s talent system and the pressure that the IPL calendar places on the long-term future of Test cricket. Even outside the Bangladesh setup, he continued to discuss the development of the sport as a whole rather than focusing only on his own career.

Why Shakib Still Matters Beyond the Scorecard

The closing stage of Shakib’s career may not produce another trophy. At this point, the opportunities available to him are increasingly limited.

However, his importance to Bangladesh cricket has never depended entirely on silverware. Discussions about the national team’s potential, identity and ability to compete with cricket’s established powers still begin with Shakib.

The next generation of Bangladeshi players will inherit the expectations he helped create. They will also be measured against the standard he established across multiple formats and nearly two decades of international competition.

Conclusion: The Player Is the Legacy

Shakib Al Hasan’s greatest achievement cannot be reduced to statistics, however impressive those statistics may be.

His legacy was built through years of carrying expectations that would have overwhelmed many other players. He dealt with political interference, selection uncertainty, public controversy and the pressure of being the cricketer against whom an entire country measured its progress.

His political sidelining, possible return and desired farewell are now inseparable from the wider story of Bangladesh cricket.

Whether the final chapter is a home series or a quieter departure, Shakib’s legacy will be judged first in Bangladesh. The players who follow him will continue to be measured against the standard he set.
